I was fortunate as child to have been left a legacy by my father. He had a gift for building successful businesses and revitalized a city with his much-needed goods and services. He brought multinational companies in and was very successful as sole distributor for Proctor and Gamble products for a third of the Philippines, as well as coconut oil and vegetable oil. He was the youngest Kiwanis President at 27 yrs old to take office and was the first
Philippine Kiwanis President to attend the International Convention held in New York in the mid 70’s. He made loans to businesses and farmers in order to keep their doors open and enabled farmers to keep their land. When he passed away at 31 yrs old, he left his widow with 4 children. With little business background, my mother built a name for herself and opened a dress shop. Her natural talents drew in politician’s wives and wealthy aristocrats and her gowns won awards in every pageant until we left the Philippines to start a new life in San Diego, CA in 1990. I was 11 yrs old.
I never knew my father, but his great love for us and his passion to serve was evident in his work. His life was his legacy. The entire city closed down to attend his funeral and to this day, I still hear about his great deeds and about the many lives he’s touched. My mother is exceptional in her own right, silently strong and steadfast in her discipline, she once again built a successful company in San Diego and La Jolla, California with 70+ Caregivers. She is dearly loved by her clients and caregivers, but more importantly, by my stepfather, who loves the family unconditionally. They run the business together with such passion and love for the work that they do.
Childhood
I enjoyed orations and declamations or performing for our local church in singing and skits before I was 10 years old. I began as a social coordinator for our church youth group at 13 yrs old. At age 14, I volunteered within the inner workings of Patient Services and Pharmaceutical Department at Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego, California, renowned for their personalized care, compassion and healing. My childhood experiences led me in becoming an advocate and an active participant in worldwide outreach ministries. At a young age, I was host (presenter) for several local outreach conferences alongside community, government and church leaders geared to bringing hope and assistance locally and to third world countries, especially ones adversely affected by war and lack.
In college, I had the privilege of serving as a Senator for the College Student Body for 2 terms and worked alongside, then, former Mayor of Chula Vista, CA, Ms. Shirley Horton on Proposition JJ, a $95 million bond measure for school improvements that received overwhelming voter approval. I also served as President of the Environmental Club for the college for two consecutive years and brought local businesses environmental awareness and issues through student and community programs.
Prior to entering the business world, I was a Judicial Intern in the legal sector of the San Diego County Family Court Systems assisting attorneys and judges and the legal department in domestic violence and child support areas. The experience opened my eyes in firmly advocating women and children issues. In the meantime, I volunteered and served faithfully as a Youth Leader and Writer/Editor of the PV Youth Newsletter at Paradise Valley Church, a 500+ member body of faith. Our Youth group encouraged and
introduced young leaders to the world of ministry through Youth Programs and Pathfinder Group Activities. For 8 yrs., I was a Pathfinder and later became a Staff/Counselor, training and assisting in youth empowerment and leadership. As a Certified Training Instructor for The American Red Cross Masters of Disaster® curriculum, I helped organizations educate youth about the importance in disaster safety and preparedness.
I married my husband and moved to Hawaii on military orders in 1999 where I found myself volunteering for the 25th Infantry Division as part of the Family Readiness Group. FRG offers soldiers numerous tools and emotional support for family members when soldiers are deployed. There, I earned the highest honor for a military spouse, bestowed
from the Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery branches of the US Army, a lifetime achievement award, The Order of Molly Pitcher Award, which recognizes individuals who have voluntarily contributed in a significant way to the improvement of the Field Artillery Community. All the while, I worked as Head of the Special Proceedings, Probate, Trusts and Wills of the First Circuit Court of Hawaii in the Legal Department. During that time, I pursued a B.A in International Business at Hawaii Pacific University.
The military brought us to Arizona years later and I continued to volunteer my time within the workings of the church, youth department and military installations. In 2007, I received my real estate license and worked within the Keller Williams Realty Family. I was recognized as Top Producer for Keller Williams Southwest Region in 2008 and featured on the Newsletter for my leadership and training abilities. I taught various classes to KW agents and local business owners in building their business and developed a curriculum for “Sustainable Business” for my workshops throughout Phoenix as well as my Affinity Partner Program.
Entrepreneurship found me and I entered the business world on Nov. 2007 to what is known today as “VIE LLC.” This venture gave me full ownership to the sought-after Vie International Agricultural Development Community Program, which has captured the attention worldwide and gathered support from business heads, international, as well as local associations, government officials, major growers, manufacturers, top level executives, 62 Sheiks within the Anbar Province of Iraq, Governors of various Iraqi Provinces, top US Universities, Department of Commerce representatives, Department of Defense officials, various offices of the United Nations and the Office of Her Majesty, Queen Rania of Jordan. This For-Profit program compassionately displays its humanitarian heart by addressing the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goal:
- End Poverty and Hunger
- Universal Education
- Gender Equality
- Child Health
- Maternal Health
- Combat HIV/AIDS
- Environmental Sustainability and
- Global Partnership.
The harmonious blend of the Environmental, Social and Economic Sustainability of the program can be replicated anywhere in the world. The program is composed of chosen associates, who are experts in their field, with the assistance of U.S Universities and top leaders in their field, and require them to come together to bring this global solution to address global needs.
Currently, Sustainable World Council is conceptualizing an online community that triggers many passions: connects collaboration and project managing tools for the purpose of organizing programs anywhere in the world and answers needs for individuals and various entities. The program’s inner workings and components, which are constantly perfected, have attracted the same amount of interests as the Agriculture Program, as well as the interests of top CEOs of major companies, SMEs, researchers, green technology companies, and media heads which can assist them in taking their mission and building on their vision to serving the world community in a common goal.
I am a proponent for the quote by Martin Luther King that states “Philanthropy is commendable, but it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.”
Blessed with a loving and supportive family throughout my life, we enjoy our time together and they understand the value of various business projects, as well as volunteering at our local church and St. Mary’s Food Bank, “a nonprofit organization which helps to alleviate hunger by efficiently gathering and distributing food to sites that serve the hungry. The organization is committed to volunteerism, building community relationships and improving the quality of life for Arizonans in need.”
Reflection
I am exactly who I had always hoped I’d be, always eager to learn, open to challenges, able to conquer my mountains and always in search of pioneering individuals who are looking to change their world in a significant way. I am my father’s daughter and that sense of entrepreneurship and social responsibility has made its way to me. That compassion that you see is that compassion my mother has gifted me. I pray that it continue to fuel me in every way, wake me with that sense of wonder and passion each and every day. Because, as Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, eloquently said, “Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
Just like you, I face many battles. What remains constant in my life is knowing that although I am not perfect, I have a God who is.
